The School Committee held a meeting on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. in the Retirement Board Conference Room, 3rd floor, Town Hall. The meeting was held concurrent with the School Committee’s Policy Subcommittee meeting. Chairman Margil called the meeting to order at 8:35 a.m.

Jim Hardy Massachusetts Association of School Committees
The members and others present discussed policy options for naming rights to Natick Public School facilities. It was determined that any such policy—should one be developed—should take into account the following factors, whether or not these factors are explicitly addressed in any such policy:
1. Revocability of naming rights
2. The distinction between corporate / sponsored names and commemorative names
3. Whether and how names should reflect educational or community significance
4. Whether naming for deceased students or staff should be allowable
5. How and by what criteria facilities can be renamed or have their names removed
6. Insuring that any policy for naming facilities take into account all other district policies as well as state or other relevant law.
7. The process by which facility names will be selected and voted by the Committee, including, but not limited to:
- The inclusion of a public notice and comment period
- The inclusion of a “cooling off” period
- Creation of an established criteria for selecting names
- Whether or not key administrative staff (Superintendent and/or facility Principal) should be involved in the decision and/or have approval rights
- The required margin of approval for any Committee votes related to naming
- The specification of the duration of the naming
It was agreed that additional meetings would be required, as well as input from other members of the School Committee.
At 9:15 a.m., Mr. Coburn moved to adjourn the School Committee meeting. Mr. Margil seconded. It was unanimously approved.
