New Englanders’ quality of life has always been circumscribed by the region’s ecosystem. To maintain and improve their standard of living people had to adjust to limited resources. Ecological determinism, the ecosystem’s influence over how people make a living and preserve and improve their material status, is evident in every facet of New England life. Muir describes these stages from hunting through farming, peddling, seafaring, lumbering, tanning, shoemaking, fishing, and manufacturing to the present era with its crises, scarce fossil energy, and environmental degradation. A new revolution appears necessary to maintain economic activity and preserve the standard of living to which people are accustomed. Innovation and ingenuity have always played a role in New England’s efforts to stem economic decline and the erosion of its quality of life.
