Project Description

The Town of Natick is working on possible improvements for 1) pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility, and 2) general wayfinding, lighting, and streetscape design along Main Street (Route 27) in Natick Center from Cottage Street to South Avenue (see map of study area below).

Why is This Project Happening?

  • To repair and/or replace aging roadway & infrastructure along Main Street in Natick Center
  • To fill in a gap in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure that exists along Main Street between Cottage Street and South Avenue
  • To address current & future roadway congestion challenges as new residents move into downtown developments
  • To spur economic development by enhancing streetscape design, amenities, and pedestrian infrastructure in Natick Center.

The maps below show a simplified and detailed view, respectively, of the study area for the project along Main Street from Cottage Street to South Avenue.

Current Corridor Design Concept

The Main Street project team has spent the past few years creating a design concept for the corridor that will serve as the basis for further rounds of technical design in Phase 2. Developed through an analysis of existing conditions and community input, the current version, known as the hybrid concept, combines elements of two original design concepts while maintaining competitiveness for potential future funding from the Boston Region Metropolitan Organization's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). It provides bicycle accommodations along the corridor while maintaining as many existing parking spaces as possible.

Town staff are conducting another round of community engagement during the spring of 2026 to ensure that stakeholders from across the community can give feedback on the hybrid concept. The Main Street Working Group will help further refine the concept, and the wider public will have the chance to weigh in on it at a public forum in early April 2026. At the end of this process, the Natick Select Board will vote on whether to take the revised hybrid concept into Phase 2. See the timeline above for more details.
